In May 2010, Carmichael Gallery will present “Keith Haring – Urban Legend”, a selection of original works by world-renowned American artist Keith Haring. On display in the gallery’s rooms will be over 20 original works on canvas, paper, vintage street signs and a rare vinyl blow up “Radiant Baby Doll” from Haring’s 27th birthday party in 1985.

Recognized as one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century, Carmichael Gallery is proud to present an exhibition honoring his iconic visual language in honor of the 20th anniversary of his passing. Emerging in the Soho alternative art scene and rising to international fame in the mid-1980s, he is associated today with artists such as Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. His large, remarkably cohesive body of work, which spans just over a decade, is distinguished by iconic, bold figures and an expressive, socially-informed aesthetic, the effortless fluidity and accessible nature of which encompass elements from and bridge the gap between subversive and mainstream contemporary art.

case at Carmichael Gallery

Carmichael Gallery just  announced The L.A. case, an exhibition of new works on canvas by German artist case. This is case’s first US solo exhibition and the second time he has exhibited at Carmichael Gallery.

october82009
case’s new body of work references imagery from elaborate, self-staged photo shoots using spray paint on canvas. Combining exacting technical expertise with an innovative hint of liberation and irony, he investigates the parallels that exist between the conflicting states of convention and controversy, manipulating beauty in a dark, thrilling and provocative manner.

case is widely recognized as one of the best photorealistic spray paint artists in the world. His groundbreaking technique, detailed in the book Ma’Claim: Photorealistic Graffiti, Falk Lehmann and Steffen Petermann, Publikat Verlags und Handels GmbH and Co. KG, Germany, 2006, has set new standards and established a strong international collector base and fan network.

Carmichael shows Dan Baldwin and London Police

August 28, 2009 · Posted in artists, exhibitions · Comment

Carmichael Gallery has two great shows opening simultaneously on September 10, both featuring artists from the UK.

In the front gallery is “Disillusion”, a solo with acclaimed painter Dan Baldwin. “Disillusion” will feature 15 works on canvas, a selection of hand-painted ceramic vases and an exclusive, limited edition print which play with pop cultural icons, myths and symbolic imagery.

Baldwin bridges the gap between abstract and figurative painting to create a landscape that simultaneously reflects reality, the power of the imagination and the private, inner workings of his mind. His style has a unique aesthetic which is difficult to categorize. Working by instinct, it can change dramatically depending on the subject matter he is exploring and the emotions he is channeling. His candid expressivity, playful manipulation of iconography and vibrant application of color, mark making and mixed media reflect his continued interest since his days as an art student in the works of Pollock, Warhol, Basquiat, Rauschenberg, Twombly and Bacon.

In the rear gallery is “Brothers in Arms”, an exciting new show from UK-born, Amsterdam-based collective The London Police. Internationally recognized for their artwork, toy design and street interventions, they are celebrating their ten year anniversary with an exhibition of all new Hollywood-themed paintings, video and photographs. Chaz and Bob have been handcuffed to each other for the duration of the creative process for “Brothers in Arms” and have filmed every step of the way. The result is an eye-opening exploration of personal space and the bonds of friendships.

The London Police have developed a clean, distinct, and highly recognizable style over the years. The sensory thrill of their work is influenced in part by technology and science fiction, the magic of the cinema, and the empowering nature of the urban environment. Their interest in artistic identity and branding and ability to reappropriate and remix likens their style to that of Takeshi Murakami, while the iconic function of the LADS, on the other hand, is not dissimilar to Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse.
